Die Germanistik ist als Fachdisziplin bis heute an die soziale Konstellation ihrer Entstehung gebunden. Ihre Ausdifferenzierung wird im Zusammenhang des Übergangs zur modernen, funktional differenzierten Gesellschaft in Deutschland an der Wende vom 18. zum 19. Jahrhundert rekonstruiert. Für die Entwicklung ihrer Programmatik als Wissenschaft verwendet die Germanistik die Semantik von Volk und Nation, die zu diesem Zeitpunkt wissenschaftskonstitutive Kraft besitzt. In dem Ma e wie diese Semantik von Volk und Nation im Laufe des 19. Jahrhunderts an Bedeutung verliert, führt die nationalsprachliche Abgrenzung der Germanistik zu Krisen. Als Fachdisziplin verharrt die Germanistik zwischen Ausdifferenzierung und Integration, stabilisiert wird sie vor allem durch ihre Funktion im Erziehungssystem.
