Der gebürtige Bremer Johann Georg Kohl war Reiseschriftsteller und Stadtbibliothekar in Bremen. In den 1850er Jahren befasste sich Kohl insbesondere mit der Neuen Welt. Im Auftrag des amerikanischen Instituts für die Meeresküste wurde Kohl während seines Aufenthalts in den USA mit der Erforschung des Golfstroms von der Zeit der Entdeckung Amerikas durch Columbus bis zur Mitte des 19. Jahrhundert beauftragt. Seine umfangreichen Erkenntnisse und Ergebnisse zur Geschichte der Ozeane und den geografischen Entdeckungen schildert er in dem vorliegenden Werk. Dieses Buch ist ein Nachdruck der längst vergriffenen Originalausgabe von 1868.
