Synopsis "Hidden History"

More than two million men and women from South-East Asia served during the Second World War – the largest volunteer force in history. They fought across Europe, North Africa, the Middle East and South-East Asia; they worked in factories, survived displacement, endured famine, and helped shape the outcome of a global conflict. Yet their experiences remain one of the least known and least acknowledged chapters of the Second World War in Britain. Based on IWM London’s exhibition Hidden History: India’s Second World War, this publication will place India’s wartime experience at the heart of the global story of the war, challenging long-held assumptions about empire, loyalty and sacrifice, and offering a fuller, more inclusive understanding of Britain and India’s shared past.
