Ana María Matute (Barcelona, 1925–2014) was one of the most prominent writers in Spanish literature of the 20th century. Her work spans genres such as the novel, short story, and children's and youth literature, exploring themes like childhood, post-war, and fantasy. Among her most recognized works are Los hijos muertos (1958), Primera memoria (1959), Los soldados lloran de noche (1964), Olvidado rey Gudú (1996), and Paraíso inhabitado (2008).

Throughout her career, Matute received numerous awards, including the Planeta Prize (1954), the Nadal Prize (1959), the National Prize for Children's and Youth Literature (1984), the National Prize for Spanish Letters (2007), and the Cervantes Prize (2010). In 1996, she was elected a member of the Royal Spanish Academy, becoming the third woman to be part of this institution.
