Copleston, an Oxford Jesuit and specialist in the history of philosophy, first created his history as an introduction for Catholic ecclesiastical seminaries. The 11-volume series gives an accessible account of each philosopher's work, but also explains their relationship to the work of other philosophers.

He was born in Great Britain and was a philosophy professor at Heythrop. He began writing texts on the history of philosophy for his students, and from that educational endeavor, his monumental work History of Philosophy was born. Today, it is considered his magnum opus and the best introduction to Western philosophy ever made. This work was directed by Manuel Sacristán and translated by him and other prestigious Spanish philosophers. Also of great interest is his debate with Bertrand Russell on the existence of God, originally broadcast on the BBC. Among the rest of his work, we can highlight Nietzsche, Schopenhauer, and Saint Thomas Aquinas.
