When trouble comes to the pasture, Rudolph was born in and where he lived with his parents, his mother leads him deep into the woods to a hidden glade with a stream nearby, telling him to stay there, keep hidden and she will return for him when it is safe. His mother did not come back. One night, he is visited by an animal with his grey coat and gold eyes, but the large dog introduces himself. Toby is a Weimar, and he convinces Rudolph to journey with him to safety. The walk to the shelter of Santa's home and stables is long and dark.
