It is contact and connections, rather than solitary civilisations, that drive historical change. It is not peoples that make history – people do.

Josephine Quinn is a professor of Ancient History at the University of Oxford, and Martin Frederiksen is an associate professor and tutor in Ancient History at Worcester College, Oxford. She graduated from Oxford and the University of Berkeley, has taught in the United States, Italy, and the United Kingdom, and has co-directed archaeological excavations of teams made up of British and Tunisians in Utica. She is a regular contributor to the London Review of Books, as well as radio and television programs. She is the author of the award-winning book In Search of the Phoenicians.
