A Alejandro Gaviria la inminencia de la muerte le devolvió la vida. Hace casi un año le diagnosticaron un linfoma. En un comienzo los médicos pensaron que se podría enfrentar fácilmente, pero no fue así. Gaviria lo superó con un tratamiento agresivo. Durante el proceso recibió el apoyo y la solidaridad de miles de colombianos, y los dardos de algunos creyentes que le dijeron que lo que le pasaba era consecuencia de su ateísmo impenitente. En este libro reflexiona sobre lo que vivió, que lo afianzó aún más en su escepticismo religioso, y lo conecta con algunos de los temas que han pasado por su despacho en el Ministerio de Salud. Es un ensayo que mezcla su vivencia personal y profesional con la poesía, la que considera "la única religión que le va quedando a los hombres", y la literatura. ==================================================================================================== "This book is in part an act of gratitude, an impartial and imperfect testimony of reciprocity, and a declaration of appreciation to many friends and citizens". The imminence of death brought Alejandro Gaviria back to life. Almost a year ago he was diagnosed with lymphoma. At first the doctors thought that it could be treated easily, but that turned out not to be the case. Gaviria only overcame his illness through aggressive treatment. During the process, he received the support and solidarity of thousands of Colombians, and the curve balls of some religious believers who assured him that his decaying health was a consequence of his unrepentant atheism. In this book he reflects on this experience, which further strengthened his religious skepticism, and connected him with some of the issues he has seen during his time in office at the Ministry of Health. This is an essay that mixes his personal and professional experience with poetry, which he considers is "the only religion left to men", and literature.

Engineer, economist, and Colombian writer. He has been the Minister of Health and Education of Colombia. Holds a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of California (San Diego). A few years ago, the newspaper Portafolio named him the best Economics professor in Colombia. He also received the Simón Bolívar Journalism Award. Throughout his career, he has published dozens of specialized articles on economics and social policy. He is the author of more than ten books, including Today is Always Still, about his experience with cancer, and I Do Not Expect to Make That Journey, about Stefan Zweig and humanism in times of madness.
