James Herriot was the pseudonym of James Alfred Wight (1916-1995), a British veterinarian and author, famous for his endearing stories about rural life and his work as a veterinarian in the English countryside. He was born in Sunderland, England, and studied veterinary medicine at the University of Glasgow.

After working as a veterinarian in Yorkshire, Herriot began writing stories based on his experiences with animals and their owners. His warm, humorous, and humane style captivated readers around the world.

His best-known work is the book series that began with If Only They Could Talk (1970), which includes titles such as All Creatures Great and Small. These stories were adapted into several TV series and movies, solidifying his legacy.
