English summary: Johann Joachim Spalding (1714-1804) was a master scholar of German Enlightenment Theology. Through his work for the church, especially in his role as the highest ranking representative of Prussian Lutheranism, his widespread writings on religious theology and his much treasured sermons, he not only shaped the theory and practice of piety of his time but also created fundamental premises to which the Protestant Church and Protestant Theology refer to this day. Albrecht Beutel explains how Enlightenment theology took on an exemplary occurrence in Spalding's life and work. The flexibility in his - at the time common - loyalty to tradition, the potential for modern thought in the construction of his theological theories and not least the clarity and beauty of his language all played a part when Immanuel Kant declared: "Spalding is better than any of them."
