Synopsis "La Doctora Cole / Choices (in Spanish)"

ENGLISH DESCRIPTION With Choices, Noah Gordon brings to a close his great trilogy spanning the generations of the Cole medical dynasty. Beginning with the legendary 11th-century doctor Robert J. Cole, each eldest son has borne the same name and middle initial, and some have possessed the uncanny "sixth sense" known as The Gift--the terrible and instinctive knowledge that someone is about to die. In Choices, it emerges again in the present, but this time in a daughter, Roberta Jeanne d'Arc Cole, known as R.J. She defies her beloved father when she chooses to study law rather than medicine, yet destiny is to overtake her when she realizes that she has inherited The Gift. As she holds the hands of a sick man, R.J. feels a dreadful certainty that he is going to die. Tragically, he is her own lover. Struggling with her grief, R.J. knows she must bow to the inevitable and become a physician. But her life changes when she moves to a small-town practice and is faced with a terrible dilemma.

Noah Gordon was born on November 11, 1926 in Worcester, Massachusetts (United States). He attended Boston University to study medicine, as his parents wished, but ultimately ended up studying journalism. In the early 1950s, he began working as an editor in New York at Avon Publishing. His first novel was The Rabbi (1965), an autobiographical text featuring Michael Kind that achieved considerable sales success. Later titles would include The Death Committee (1969), where the medical theme was an essential part of the plot, The Jerusalem Diamond (1979), and his consecration as a best-selling author, The Physician (1986), the first part of the well-known trilogy about the British-origin Cole family that would continue with Shaman (1992) and Dr. Cole (1996). His latest works have been The Last Jew (2000), with action taking place in 15th century Spain and featuring a character named Yonah Toledano, Sam and Other Animal Stories (2002), a book of stories dedicated to children, and The Winery (2007), a novel set in the world of winemaking.
