Joann Sfar nació el 28 de agosto de 1971 en Niza, Francia. Es un reconocido dibujante, guionista, novelista y director de cine, considerado una de las figuras más importantes del cómic contemporáneo francés. Hijo de una familia judía de raíces sefardíes y asquenazíes, su herencia cultural y la temprana muerte de su madre marcaron profundamente su obra.
Estudió filosofía en Niza y posteriormente en la École des Beaux-Arts de París, donde perfeccionó su estilo artístico. Inició su carrera en los años noventa dentro de la editorial L’Association, destacando por su narrativa imaginativa y su trazo expresivo. Sfar es autor de más de un centenar de obras, entre ellas las célebres series “Le Chat du Rabbin” (El gato del rabino), “Petit Vampire” y “Klezmer”, además de su participación en la saga “Donjon” junto a Lewis Trondheim.
Su trabajo se caracteriza por combinar humor, reflexión filosófica, espiritualidad y temas identitarios, explorando la religión, el amor y la fantasía con sensibilidad y ironía. En 2010 dirigió la película “Gainsbourg: Vie héroïque”, biografía del cantante Serge Gainsbourg, y más tarde adaptó su propio cómic El gato del rabino al cine animado. Sfar sigue siendo una voz singular e influyente en la cultura europea contemporánea.

Born on May 6, 1969 in Issy-les-Moulineaux (France), after studying Applied Arts, he made his professional debut in 1994 in the pages of Fluide Glacial magazine, where he created various comics. Two years later, the publisher Audie released his first album, which compiled the material appeared in the magazine. Later, he went on to collaborate with the weekly Spirou, creating stories that would be collected in three albums. In 1997, he founded, with Nicolas Lebedel, his own publishing house: Les Rêveurs de Runes, where he self-published his most personal and experimental projects. In 2000, he collaborated with Lewis Trondheim on his famous saga La Mazmorra, illustrating various albums. That same year, he joined the publisher Dargaud, for whose collection Poisson Pilote he produced Los mundos intermedios (2000), Les cosmonautes du futur (2001, script by Trondheim), Le retour a la Terre (2002, script by Jean-Yves Ferri) and La légende de Robin des Bois (2003). The publication of Los combates cotidianos (2003) earned him the Best Album Award at the Angoulême Salon of 2004. That same year, he published in Norma Editorial La carretera and Terapia de grupo.
