en 1815, la más grande flota y el más grande ejército al servicio de fernando vii cruza el océano atlántico: sesenta y seis barcos, doce mil hombres para contener una revolución. entre los hombres se encuentra el joven mateo castell. mateo, a sus diecisiete años y con su biblia en la mano, llega a nueva granada a bordo del virgen de la esperanza para servir a su rey y defender a españa, peleando en una guerra que trata de impedir la independencia de las colonias americanas, una guerra incomprensible y cruel en la que todo parece fallarle al joven, incluso sus creencias. al llegar a cartagena de indias, comienza la aventura. en una de las primeras escaramuzas mateo es herido gravemente y se refugia en un poblado de la tribu muisca. allí conoce a divayra, una joven que le salva la vida y le cuida. divayra y mateo viven una historia de amor, mateo comienza una nueva vida en común en el poblado muisca, conociendo sus costumbres ancestrales, integrándose... viviendo la vida con esperanza, sobre todo cuando se entera de que va a ser padre. una noche, una tropa de soldados españoles asalta el poblado muisca y captura a mateo. el joven tiene que volver a pelear en las dos grandes batallas de la independencia americana que finalmente consigue ganar simón bolívar.

mateo castell cree que jamás volverá a ver a divayra y a su hijo, pero se equivoca.
