He was born in Connecticut and graduated from Yale in 1951. In Paris (1953-1954) he met Dominique Lapierre, with whom he has written five of his great bestsellers. In 1956, he moved to Rome as deputy editor-in-chief and in November of that same year he was appointed correspondent in Beirut for the Middle East. In 1959, he took over Newsweek in Beirut, which gave him the opportunity to cover a time full of political and social unrest in countries like India, Pakistan, Ethiopia, Egypt, and Sudan. In 1961, Newsweek named him head of its Paris office, allowing him to come into contact with circles of Algerian armed violence. In 1962, Larry Collins and Dominique Lapierre decided to join their experience as reporters. In October of that same year, and with the imminent intervention of the US army in Vietnam, Larry Collins took charge of the Newsweek branch in Saigon. But that same day, both he and Dominique Lapierre received an offer from Reader's Digest to write two books, which would turn into many more.
