L'histoire du Somaliland présente des particularités qui le distinguent politiquement de la Somalie. La date du 26 juin 1960, date à laquelle le protectorat du Somaliland est devenu indépendant, fait date dans l'histoire du Somaliland. Cependant, après quatre jours de reconnaissance internationale en tant qu'État indépendant, le Somaliland a formé une union avec la Somalie italienne qui a échoué après trois décennies car elle était loin de répondre aux attentes du peuple d'origine somalilandaise. Au départ, l'injustice, la discrimination et le manque de développement généralisés dans les régions du nord ont engendré une méfiance qui s'est finalement transformée en une dissidence ouverte avec la formation d'une opposition armée (SNM). Les politiques de la terre brûlée, les violations des droits de l'homme, les atrocités et les crimes contre l'humanité mis en oeuvre par le gouvernement ont été décrits de manière graphique. Le Somaliland s'est retiré de l'union et a récupéré sa souveraineté perdue en 1991, et a depuis lors réussi à établir avec succès la paix, la sécurité, la stabilité et la démocratisation. Enfin, l'ouvrage analyse le défi contemporain (la reconnaissance internationale) en soutenant que, avec tous ses attributs d'État, le Somaliland mérite une reconnaissance internationale.
