Axel Martin Fredrik Munthe fue un médico, psiquiatra y escritor sueco nacido en 1857 y fallecido en 1949, cuya carrera combinó el rigor de la medicina con una sensibilidad profundamente humana. Tras estudiar en Uppsala, París y otras ciudades europeas, ejerció como médico tanto en Francia como en Italia, además de servir como médico de la corte sueca. Munthe se destacó no solo por su práctica clínica, sino por su filantropía: atendió sin cobrar a personas sin recursos y ofreció ayuda en epidemias y desastres, reflejando una compasión que marcó toda su vida.

Su obra más célebre es La historia de San Michele, un relato autobiográfico que narra sus experiencias personales y profesionales, así como la construcción de su amada Villa San Michele en la isla de Capri. Más que una simple memoria, el libro es una reflexión sobre la vida, la naturaleza humana y la búsqueda de significado, que ha perdurado como un clásico moderno y ha sido traducido a numerosas lenguas, alcanzando un público global.
