Francis D. K. Ching (Honolulu, 1943) se tituló como arquitecto en 1966 por la University of Notre Dame en Indiana y, tras varios años de práctica profesional, comenzó a impartir clases en la Ohio University en 1972. Actualmente es profesor emérito del College of Built Environments de la University of Washington (Seattle), donde ha ejercido la mayor parte de su larga trayectoria como docente. A los inicios de su carrera, y como parte de la preparación para sus clases de dibujo arquitectónico, Ching elaboró 400 páginas de apuntes de clase que incluían ilustraciones y textos explicativos. Estas anotaciones dieron origen a la edición en 1974 de Architectural Graphics (Manual de dibujo arquitectónico, 1976), la primera de una larga serie de obras que han hecho internacionalmente famoso a este maestro del dibujo arquitectónico. Otros títulos importantes de Ching son Diccionario visual de arquitectura (1997), Dibujo y proyecto (con S. P. Juroszek 1999), Diseño interior (con C. Binggeli, 2010) y Una historia universal de la arquitectura (con M. M. Jarzombek y V. Prakash, 2010), todos ellos publicados por Editorial Gustavo Gili.

Francis D. K. Ching (Honolulu, 1943) is an American architect, professor, and author widely recognized for his work in teaching architectural design and graphic representation. After earning his degree in Architecture from the University of Notre Dame in 1966, he practiced professionally before beginning his teaching career at Ohio University in 1972. Later, he joined the University of Washington, where he served as a professor and is currently professor emeritus at the College of Built Environments.

His most influential work is Architecture: Form, Space, and Order, a classic introduction to the principles of architectural design. Other notable titles include Architectural Graphics (1975), Building Structures Illustrated (2009), A Visual Dictionary of Architecture (1995), and A Global History of Architecture (2007), the latter co-authored with Mark M. Jarzombek and Vikramaditya Prakash. His books, characterized by clear and didactic illustrations, have been translated into more than 18 languages and are considered benchmarks in the training of architects and designers.
