"जब था साकी यार हमारा हम थे और मैलाता था अब वो दिन कहाँ कैफियत के, वो भी एक जमाना था. जब से बसा तू दिल में आकर हुई है सूरत आबादी रहता था कौन आ के इसमें, ये तो एक वीराला था. बहादुर शाह जफर भारत में मुगल साम्राज्य के अंतिम बादशाह और उर्दू के जाने-माने शायर थे। उनकी ऐसी कई बेहतरीन शायरियाँ आपको इस किताब में पड़ने को मिल जाएँगी. उन्होंने 1857 ई. के प्रथम भारतीय स्वतंत्रता संग्राम में सिपाहियों का नेतृत्व किया था। युद्ध में पराजय के बाद अंग्रेज़ों ने उन्हें बर्मा (म्यांमार) भेज दिया, जहाँ उनकी मृत्यु हुई। बादशाह जफर ने जब रंजून में कारावास के दौरान अपनी आखिरी साँस ली तो कहा जाता है कि शायद उनके लबों पर अपनी ही मशहूर गजल का यह शेर जरूर रहा होगा "कितना है बदनसीब जफरत के लिए. दो गज जमीन भी न मिली कू-ए-चार में।" उसी किताब से"
