En el estudio de mezclas de líquidos, es muy importante entender cómo se comportan diferentes sustancias cuando se combinan, especialmente si tienen densidades distintas. La densidad es la cantidad de masa que hay en un cierto volumen, y esto afecta si un líquido flota o se hunde cuando se mezcla con otro. Existen dos tipos principales de mezclas: Las mezclas homogéneas, donde no se pueden distinguir sus componentes a simple vista, como cuando mezclamos agua con alcohol. Las mezclas heterogéneas, donde sí se pueden ver las diferentes partes, como cuando juntamos agua con aceite. En este tipo de mezclas, las sustancias no se combinan completamente y cada una conserva sus propias propiedades físicas. En este experimento se usaron tres líquidos comunes: miel, agua, aceite vegetal, jabón para trastes y alcohol etílico. Estos se vertieron uno por uno en un recipiente transparente para observar su comportamiento. Debido a que cada líquido tiene una densidad diferente, no se mezclaron entre sí. En lugar de eso, formaron capas separadas, donde la miel quedó en el fondo (por ser la másdensa), el agua en el medio y el aceite arriba (por ser el menos denso).
