Synopsis "Menexene (in French)"

English Summary: Who is going to give the funeral oration in honor of departed soldiers, during the annual ceremony that Athenian democracy devotes to them? To that question coming from the young Menexenus, Socrates answers in an unusual way: instead of initiating a dialogue, he delivers the speech made the day before by Aspasia. How are we to read this Platonic version of the funeral oratory? Is it a parody of the one Thucydides had attributed to Pericles? The parody of a genre that takes its codes from a social and political agenda? Or, on the contrary, a model inspired by the edifying ambitions of an allegedly Platonic ethics? One thing, at least, is clear: Menexenus is an episode of the struggle between dialectics and rhetorics which pervades Plato's whole work. Echoing many themes recurring in other dialogues, Socrates' oratory shows the complex game between philosophy and sophistry which political speech must enter if it must both convince and educate. Plato (Athens, ca. 427 BC – ca. 347 BC) was a Greek philosopher, a disciple of Socrates and teacher of Aristotle, whose work deeply influenced Western philosophy. He founded the Academy of Athens, one of the first educational institutions of the ancient world. His philosophical legacy is conveyed through dialogues, a literary genre in which he developed ideas about ethics, politics, epistemology, and metaphysics.

Among his most recognized works are Apology of Socrates, Crito, and The Symposium, all written approximately between 399 and 385 BC, in addition to The Republic and Phaedo. Through the character of Socrates, Plato explores themes that remain central in philosophical thought. His influence endures to this day, although he received no formal awards, given the historical context.
