Microtubules are filaments of the cytoskeleton. They typically form through the polymerization of - and -tubulin dimers elongating existing microtubules. The de novo formation of microtubules requires an initiation event called microtubule nucleation. Microtubule nucleation requires the action of a third type of tubulin, -tubulin, which is distinct from the and subunits which compose the microtubules themselves. The -tubulin combines with several other associated proteins to form a circular structure known as the -tubulin ring complex ( -TuRC).
