Mark Van Doren (1894-1972) nació en Hope, Illinois, y obtuvo su maestría y doctorado en la Universidad de Columbia, donde impartió clases de literatura durante casi cuarenta años y entre cuyos alumnos se encontraban Thomas Merton, John Berryman y Allen Ginsberg. Fue allí, y con su libro The Liberal Education, donde contribuyó a promover el influyente movimiento de los "grandes libros". Van Doren fue editor literario de The Nation y presidente de la Academia Estadounidense de las Artes y las Letras. Entre sus libros se encuentran biografías críticas de escritores como Dryden y Hawthorne; un estudio de poesía épica, The Noble Voice; varias obras de teatro; una autobiografía; novelas; y numerosos volúmenes de poesía, incluyendo Poemas Completos, 1922-1938, ganador del Premio Pulitzer.
