In Zeiten massiver Industrialisierung und der zunehmenden Orientierung Spaniens an der europäischen Moderne wollte Zuloaga mit solchen Szenen die "spanische Seele" bewahren. Zu Lebzeiten des Künstlers wurde seine Malerei international gefeiert. Der Band ist die erste umfassende monografische Publikation zum Künstler in deutscher Sprache.
