Invierno de 1943. «¿Los niños? ¿Dónde están los niños?» Las preguntas restallan en el silencio de los Pirineos franceses. Unos guías han sido capturados mientras intentaban evacuar hacia España a seis hijos de miembros de la Resistencia. Han ocultado a sus protegidos y se niegan a entregarlos. Son ejecutados por las SS, pero los niños siguen sin aparecer... Los verdugos deciden abandonarlos al frío, destruyendo la única pasarela por la que podrían regresar al valle. Los seis niños deberán organizarse, encontrar víveres y fuego, y superar las diferencias -los hay hijos de comunistas y de burgueses, de judíos y de cristianos- para tener alguna posibilidad de sobrevivir.
