Synopsis "Paolo Veronese 1528-1588"

Texts by Enrico Maria Dal Pozzolo, professor at the Università di Verona, and Miguel Falomir, director of the Museo del Prado.

English (also available in Spanish). Hardcover. 23 x 28.5 cm. 456 pages.

Catalogue published on the occasion of the exhibition Paolo Veronese (1528-1588), held at the Museo Nacional del Prado, Madrid, from 27 May to 21 September 2025.

Following the exhibitions dedicated to the Bassano (2001), Titian (2003), Tintoretto (2007) and Lotto (2018), the Museo del Prado closes the exhibition cycle dedicated to Venetian Renaissance painting, the cornerstone of its collection, with Paolo Veronese.

The catalogue offers an exhaustive analysis of the figure of Paolo Veronese (Verona, 1528 - Venice, 1588), «an extraordinarily renowned painter and true heir of Titian. It explores the lines of research onVeronese developed in recent decades, such as the desire to situate him in wider contexts (Raphael, Titian, Tintoretto, Palladio, etc.), his relationship with his clientele (public and private), with architecture and scenography, his interest in the creative process and the workings of the bottega, and his artistic legacy. For the Prado, Veronese is more than just one of the great names in the history of art, he is a fundamental link in a way of understanding Venetian painting, one that prioritised colour over design and which constituted the DNA of the former royal collection and the current museum». Miguel Falomir, Director of Museo del Prado.

The catalogue opens with an introduction by the two curators of the exhibition, followed by eleven essays written by international specialists in the figure of the painter who analyse aspects of his life, his creative process and his cultural influence. The essayists include Francesca Trivellato, Ana González Mozo, Michel Hochmann and Deborah Howard. This is followed by an extensive section divided into six parts, each preceded by an introductory text, in which the 103 works in the exhibition are reproduced and which retrace the painter's career chronologically, situating him in relation to other masters of his time. The book closes with an extensive and precise chronology, a bibliography and an index of names.
