Der vorliegende Band versammelt Beiträge zu frühen Zeugnissen der Sprachen der Philippinen und Mikronesiens. Tagalog, Bikol, Cebuano, Iloko, Chamorro und andere Sprachen dieses und angrenzender Gebiete werden in dem Sammelband beschrieben. Das Hauptaugenmerk liegt auf den frühen Grammatiken und Wörterbüchern, daraus folgenden Beschreibungen und deren möglichen Wechselwirkungen. In einigen Arbeiten wird dargelegt, wie fortschrittlich einige Grammatiker der philippinischen Sprachen waren und inwieweit sie die Sprachtypologie vorwegnahmen. Der Sammelband ist eine Pionierstudie zur Geschichte der beschreibenden Sprachwissenschaft in Südostasien und im Westpazifik.
