P oemas de la oficina (1956) no sólo inauguraron la difusión poética de Mario Benedetti en el ámbito rioplatens; también rompieron con la poesía desasida y arcádica que se precticaba entonces en su país, Uruguay. Para la crítica, Poemas de la oficina es el libro más delibradamente homogéneo y aquilibrado de un primer período de maduración (muchos de estos poemas han sido teatralizados o musicalizados y figuran en el repertorio de conocidos cantantes españoles y latinoamericanos).

Mario Benedetti was born in Paso de los Toros, Uruguay in 1920. He was educated at a German school and made a living as a stenographer, cashier, salesperson, accountant, public servant, translator, and journalist, a profession he practiced for four decades at the weekly Marcha, until it was shut down by the dictatorship. That same dictatorship forced him into exile in 1973, after which he lived successively in Argentina, Peru, Cuba, and Spain. A storyteller, poet, essayist, and playwright, he authored more than seventy books translated into eighteen languages. Among his literary works, the poetic anthologies Inventario and Inventario Dos, the novels La tregua, Gracias por el fuego, Primavera con una esquina rota, the short story collections Montevideanos, La muerte y otras sorpresas, Con y sin nostalgia, and the verse novel El cumpleaños de Juan Ángel stand out.
