Die Dipterenart Chironomus xanthus wird als Modellart in ökotoxikologischen Studien verwendet. Ziel dieser Studie war es, die Bioindikatorart C. xanthus in Labortests auf ihre Empfindlichkeit gegenüber verschiedenen Konzentrationen von Natriumchlorid (NaCl) zu untersuchen. Der Lebenszyklus der Art C. xanthus wurde bewertet, und es wurden ökotoxikologische Tests mit akuten und chronischen Versuchen durchgeführt. Die Tests wurden mit Konzentrationen von 0,5, 1, 2, 4, 8, 16 und 32 g.L-1 für den akuten Test sowie einer Kontrolle (ASTM-Medium) mit einer Expositionszeit von 24 und 48 Stunden durchgeführt. Für den chronischen Test betrugen die Konzentrationen 0,0625; 0,125; 0,25; 0,5 und 1 g.L-1, plus Kontrolle (ASTM-Medium), bei einer Expositionsdauer von 28 Tagen. Die Untersuchung der Empfindlichkeit von C. xanthus gegenüber NaCl liefert Anhaltspunkte für die Beurteilung der Frage, ob die Umwelt, insbesondere aquatische Ökosysteme, durch diesen Stoff kontaminiert werden können.
