Frente a la interpretación historiográfica habitual, según la cual el Imperio austro-húngaro "se disgregó" porque los pueblos que lo conformaban rechazaron continuar en su seno, François Fejtö nos muestra en este libro que la principal razón de su desmembramiento fue la voluntad de alterar definitivamente el equilibrio europeo por parte de los vencedores de la Gran Guerra. Apoyándose en un amplio material documental, en parte inédito, Fejtö analiza las motivaciones diplomáticas, estratégicas, y sobre todo ideológicas, que causaron la destrucción de la monarquía austrohúngara, provocando un vacío de poder que propició que primero el Reich alemán y más tarde la Unión Soviética absorbieran Europa Central. Esta reedición incluye el epílogo que el autor añadió al libro en 1992 tras la caída del muro de Berlín y la llegada de la Perestroika.
