Tomás de Aquino (1225–1274) fue un teólogo y filósofo italiano, una de las figuras más influyentes de la escolástica medieval y de la Iglesia católica. Nació en Roccasecca, cerca de Nápoles, en el seno de una familia noble. Desde joven ingresó en la orden de los dominicos, pese a la oposición de su familia, y estudió en París y Colonia, donde fue discípulo de Alberto Magno.

Su pensamiento buscó armonizar la fe cristiana con la razón, especialmente a través de la filosofía de Aristóteles. Entre sus obras más importantes destacan la Suma Teológica y la Suma contra los gentiles, donde desarrolla temas sobre la existencia de Dios, la ley natural, la moral y la relación entre razón y revelación.

Fue canonizado en 1323 y proclamado Doctor de la Iglesia en 1567. Su influencia perdura hasta hoy, siendo considerado el principal representante del tomismo, corriente que marcó profundamente la filosofía y la teología occidentales.
