Synopsis "Songs of Kabir"

The poet Kabir, a selection from whose songs is here for the first time offered to English readers, is one of the most interesting personalities in the history of Indian mysticism. Born in or near Benares, of Mohammedan parents, and probably about the year 1440, he became in early life a disciple of the celebrated Hindu ascetic Ramananda. Ramananda had brought to Northern India the religious revival which Ramanuja, the great twelfth-century reformer of Brahmanism, had initiated in the South. This revival was in part a reaction against the increasing formalism of the orthodox cult, in part an assertion of the demands of the heart as against the intense intellectualism of the Vedanta philosophy, the exaggerated monism which that philosophy proclaimed. It took in Ramanuja's preaching the form of an ardent personal devotion to the God Vishnu, as representing the personal aspect of the Divine Nature: that mystical "religion of love" which everywhere makes its appearance at a certain level of spiritual culture, and which creeds and philosophies are powerless to kill.

Rabindranath Tagore (Calcutta, India, May 7, 1861 – Santiniketan, August 7, 1941) was a Bengali poet, philosopher, musician, novelist, playwright, and educator, considered one of the most influential literary figures of modern India and the world. Son of a cultured and prominent family, Tagore received an education rich in literature, art, and both Eastern and Western thought. He was the first non-European writer to win the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1913, for his work Gitanjali (“Song Offerings”), a collection of spiritual and philosophical poems.

Tagore wrote in Bengali and English, addressing themes such as love, spirituality, freedom, and cultural identity. His work spans over a thousand poems, novels, short stories, songs, and essays. He composed the lyrics for the national anthems of India (Jana Gana Mana) and Bangladesh (Amar Shonar Bangla), highlighting his cultural and political influence.

Additionally, he founded the Visva-Bharati school and university, with a humanist and universalist approach. Tagore traveled extensively, promoting intercultural dialogue and criticizing colonialism. His legacy combines art, pedagogy, and spirituality, and continues to inspire generations of readers and thinkers.

Nació en Wolverhampton, Inglaterra, en 1875. Recibió una esmerada educación privada y asistió al King´s College para mujeres (Londres), donde estudió letras, historia, botánica y filosofía. Crecida en el agnosticismo, en 1907, durante una breve estancia en un convento franciscano, tiene lugar su conversión espiritual. A pesar de estar convencida de que la religión católica era la verdadera, diversas circunstancias impiden su adhesión a la Iglesia católica, y en 1921 optará finalmente por una pertenencia practicante al anglicanismo. En 1911, a raíz de la preparación y publicación de su obra fundamental La mística, conoce al barón Friedrich von Hügel, al que convertirá en su director espiritual; él influirá grandemente en su pensamiento y en su práctica religiosa.
