Jostein Gaarder (Oslo, 1952) was a Philosophy and History of Ideas teacher at a high school in Bergen for ten years. In 1986, he began publishing books, and in 1990 he received the Critics' Prize and the Norwegian Ministry of Culture's Literary Award for his novel The Solitaire Mystery. However, it was Sophie's World that became a true global bestseller and has been awarded in Spain with the Archbishop Juan de San Clemente Prize and the Count of Barcelona Prize.

Gaarder created the Sophie Foundation, whose annual prize financially supported the best innovative work for the environment and development. Among his extensive work, in addition to the novels already mentioned, are The Diagnosis, The Christmas Mystery, The Mirror's Enigma, Vita Brevis, Maya, The Storyteller, The Orange Girl, and The Puppeteer.
