Stan Sakai nació el 25 de mayo de 1953 en Kioto, Japón. Es un historietista, escritor e ilustrador estadounidense de ascendencia japonesa, reconocido principalmente por crear la serie de cómics Usagi Yojimbo. Cuando era pequeño se trasladó con su familia a Hawái, donde creció. Estudió Bellas Artes en la Universidad de Hawái y posteriormente continuó su formación artística en el ArtCenter College of Design de Pasadena, California.

Sakai comenzó su carrera trabajando como rotulista de cómics. Entre sus primeros trabajos destaca su colaboración en Groo the Wanderer, de Sergio Aragonés y Mark Evanier. En 1984 creó Usagi Yojimbo, una serie protagonizada por Miyamoto Usagi, un conejo samurái inspirado parcialmente en el famoso espadachín japonés Miyamoto Musashi. La obra está ambientada principalmente en el Japón feudal y combina aventura, historia y cultura japonesa.

Además de Usagi Yojimbo, Sakai creó Space Usagi y otras obras. A lo largo de su trayectoria ha recibido numerosos reconocimientos, incluidos varios premios Eisner, un Premio Inkpot y un Premio de la American Library Association. En 2020 ingresó al Salón de la Fama de los Premios Eisner. Actualmente vive y trabaja en California.
