Gabriela Mistral (Vicuña, Elqui Valley 1889 - New York, 1957) Pseudonym of Lucila de María Godoy Alcayaga. She was a poet, diplomat, and teacher from an early age. The publication of Desolation brought Mistral international recognition and prestige, making her considered one of the greatest promises of Latin American literature and a leading figure in Chilean and Hispanic-American literature of the 20th century. In 1945, she won the Nobel Prize in Literature and, only six years later, the National Prize for Literature.
