The years following 1945 witnessed a massive change in American intellectual thought and in the life of American universities. The effort to mobilize intellectual talent during the war established new links between the government and the academy. After the war, many of those who had worked with the military or the Office of Strategic Studies took jobs in the burgeoning postwar structure of university-based military research and intelligence agencies, bringing large infusions of government money into many fields.The essays in this text explore what happened to the university in these years and why. They show the many ways existing disciplines, such as anthropology, were affected by the Cold War ethos, and discuss the rise of new fields, such as area studies, and the changing nature of dissent and academic freedom during and since the Cold War.

Noam Chomsky (born in 1928) is an American linguist, philosopher, and political activist, considered one of the most influential intellectual figures of the 20th century. He revolutionized linguistics with his theory of generative grammar, introduced in Syntactic Structures (1957), and further developed in Aspects of the Theory of Syntax (1965). His approach transformed the study of language, linking it to cognition and the human mind. In 2019, he was awarded the BBVA Foundation Frontiers of Knowledge Award in Humanities for his exceptional contributions to the study of human language.

In addition to his work in linguistics, Chomsky is known for his critique of the media and US foreign policy. Along with Edward S. Herman, he co-wrote Manufacturing Consent (1988), where they present the model of media propaganda. Other notable works include Hegemony or Survival (2003), which analyzes US foreign policy, and Reflections on Language (1975), where he defends a rationalist perspective on human nature. Immanuel Maurice Wallerstein (1930-2019) fue un destacado sociólogo e historiador estadounidense, reconocido mundialmente como el principal teórico del «análisis de sistema-mundo». Su obra revolucionó la comprensión del desarrollo histórico al argumentar que el capitalismo no debe estudiarse a nivel nacional, sino como una economía-mundo única con una división global del trabajo.Su tesis central, desarrollada en su monumental obra El moderno sistema mundial (iniciada en 1974), postula que el capitalismo histórico se origina en el siglo XVI y crea una jerarquía de tres zonas: centro, semiperiferia y periferia. El centro (países desarrollados) acumula riqueza explotando a la periferia (países en desarrollo), mientras que la semiperiferia actúa como intermediario. Wallerstein rechazó los enfoques tradicionales de modernización, proponiendo que la posición de cada región está determinada por el poder económico dentro de esta estructura.Además, introdujo conceptos clave como los «cuasi-monopolios» y las «ondas de Kondratiev» para explicar los ciclos de auge y crisis del capitalismo.
