Synopsis "The Collected Short Supernatural & Weird Fiction of Jerome K. Jerome Volume 2"

The second of a two volume set of Jerome's weird and ghostly talesJerome K. Jerome was born in 1859 and became a highly regarded author and humourist, known principally or his comic novel, 'Three Men in a Boat'',(1889). A Londoner, born into poverty, of necessity Jerome became a railway clerk at the age of just 14 years, later becoming a schoolteacher, actor, and freelance journalist. His supernatural fiction fell into two clearly defined categories. The first reflected his well-known sense of humour as demonstrated in the 1891 work, 'Told After Supper,' a collection of Christmas Eve, ghostly parlour tales recounted by members of the gathering. Among these, Teddy Biffle's Story of the 'Faithful Ghost' and Mr Coombes yarn of 'The Haunted Mill', have received the most critical accolades. Jerome's adaptability and skill as a writer is demonstrated in his more seriously themed writings of the macabre, including the darkly thrilling, ' The Man of Science', which concerns a French doctor who purchases a skeleton only to find himself dreadfully haunted by a vengeful spirit. Likewise, in 'The Soul of Nicholas Snyders', an unscrupulous cruel businessman meets a strange peddler leading to chilling pact of exchanged souls. Jerome served as an ambulance driver during the First World War. He died in 1927 after being taken ill on a driving tour. Also, in this volume readers will also discover ,' The Hobby Rider','The Street of the Blank Wall' and 'The Man who did not Believe in Luck'.Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket.
