Johann L Tieck
Synopsis "The Collected Supernatural and Weird Fiction of Johann Ludwig Tieck"
The disturbing tales of an early master of folklore themed horrorJohann Ludwig Tieck was born in Berlin,Germany in the later 18th century and although, as a young man, he initially studied theology and other subjects, he shortly became a career writer and in due course, a leading light in the 'German Romantic' movement of his day. He is particularly regarded for his literary 'fairy tale' supernatural fiction, which was assuredly not written for juvenile consumption, because these were far from morality tales with comfortable conclusions. Tieck crafted dark, eerie, often folklore- based stories of unease set in remote, disturbing landscapes. Included in this Leonaur edition of Tieck's collected writings are his most highly regarded works including, ' The Love Charm', which is a doom- laden, gothic tale of witchcraft and ritual murder, whilst, 'Fair-Haired Eckbert' -considered to be his finest supernatural fiction offering- tells the story of a knight and his wife who become embroiled a nightmare of betrayal, shape-shifting, murder and incest. Tieck's contribution to the literature of the weird and bizarre is widely acknowledged to have influenced the work of Edgar Allan Poe and others. In later life Tieck became a renowned theatre director in Dresden. He died in Berlin in 1853. Also, in this collection readers will also discover , 'The Mysterious Cup','The Tannenhauser' and 'The Elves'.Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket.
