Theodor Herzl (1860–1904) fue un periodista y dramaturgo austrohúngaro, reconocido como el padre del sionismo político moderno. Tras presenciar el antisemitismo durante el caso Dreyfus en Francia, concluyó que la asimilación judía era imposible y abogó por la creación de un Estado judío independiente en Palestina, plasmado en su libro Der Judenstaat (1896).

Nacido en Budapest, Herzl organizó el Primer Congreso Sionista en Basilea en 1897, fundando la Organización Sionista Mundial para promover este objetivo a través de la diplomacia. Aunque murió joven a los 44 años en Austria, su visión sentó las bases para el establecimiento del Estado de Israel en 1948, siendo reconocido como el "Visionario del Estado".
