À ce livre écrit en 1904 Rudolf Steiner a expressément voulu donner le caractère d'une introduction. Grâce à une observation très précise de l'homme, Steiner fait apparaître méthodiquement les différents constituants de la nature humaine, depuis le corps physique jusqu'aux différents éléments suprasensibles de son être. Partant de la réalité de la biographie humaine, il fonde une compréhension moderne de la réincarnation et du Karma. Par-là, cet ouvrage se place au coeur de la démarche anthroposophique. On peut dire que "La théosophie" est le livre qui, à l'aube du XXème siècle, pose les premiers éléments d'une science de l'esprit. Steiner l'a en effet conçu comme un éveilleur de la vie de l'esprit, et non comme une somme de révélations. Il souhaitait qu'on lise ce livre autrement qu'on lit d'autres livres: en élaborant par soi-même chaque phrase. C'est en effet à chaque lecteur d'en expérimenter par lui-même le contenu et d'apporter à ce texte au style mathématique et sobre, d'où l'émotion et la chaleur sont volontairement absentes, sa propre chaleur et sa propre émotion.

Rudolf Steiner (Donji Kraljevec, Austro-Hungarian Empire, now Croatia, February 25 or 27, 1861-Dornach, Switzerland, March 30, 1925) was an Austrian philosopher, literary scholar, educator, artist, playwright, social thinker, and occultist. He was the founder of anthroposophy, Waldorf education, biodynamic agriculture, anthroposophic medicine, and the new artistic form of eurythmy.

He described anthroposophy as follows: Anthroposophy is a path of knowledge that would like to lead the spiritual in man to the spiritual in the universe. Those who feel certain questions about the essence of man and the world as a vital necessity as the one felt when we are hungry and thirsty can be anthroposophists.

Steiner proposed a form of ethical individualism, to which he later added a more explicitly spiritual component. He derived his epistemology from the worldview of Johann Wolfgang Goethe, according to which thought is an organ of perception just like the eye or the ear. Just as the eye perceives colors and the ear sounds, so thought perceives ideas.
