José Agustín was born in Acapulco in 1944. Less than two decades later, he began publishing, positioning himself at the forefront of his generation. He was a member of the literary workshop of Juan José Arreola, who published his first novel, La tumba, in 1964. He has been a fellow of the Mexican Writers' Center and the Fulbright and Guggenheim foundations. He has written plays and screenplays, directing various projects in this field. Among his works are De perfil (1966), Inventando que sueño (1968), Se está haciendo tarde (final en laguna) (1973, Dos Océanos Award at the Biarritz Festival), El rey se acerca a su templo (1975), Cerca del fuego (1986), El rock de la cárcel (1986), No hay censura (1988), La miel derramada (1992), La panza del Tepozteco (1993), Dos horas de sol (1994), La contracultura en México (1996), Cuentos completos (2001), Los grandes discos del rock (2001), Vida con mi viuda (2004, Mazatlán Literature Prize) and Armablanca (2006). He has published essays and historical chronicles, notably the three volumes of Tragicomedia mexicana (1990, 1992, 1998). In 2011, he received the National Prize for Sciences and Arts in the field of Linguistics and Literature and the medals for Merit in Fine Arts and Artistic Merit from the Legislative Assembly of the D.F.
