Die hier vorliegende Neufassung des wichtigsten Werks von David Hume baut nach wie vor auf der unubertroffenen Ubersetzung von Theodor Lipps (1851 - 1914) auf. Die umfangreichen Erlauterungen im Funotenapparat und das vollkommen neu entwickelte Stichwortverzeichnis stellen eine zusatzlich wertvolle Hilfe fur jeden Leser dar, egal ob er zum ersten Male mit Humes Gedanken in Kontakt kommt oder als Philosoph standig auf Hume zuruckgreift und eine entsprechend verlassliche Textausgabe benotigt. Der Text der ursprunglichen Ubersetzung wurde fur diese Ausgabe stilistisch und lexikalisch, aber auch grammatisch und orthografisch auf den neuesten Stand gebracht. Unter anderem erfolgte eine Umstellung des gesamten Textes auf die neue deutsche Rechtschreibung. All dies erhoht dessen Lesbarkeit deutlich. Gleichwohl geschah die Modernisierung sehr behutsam, so dass die Ubersetzung den Leser weiterhin so nah an das Humesche Gedankengut heranbringt, wie es bislang nur die Lippssche Ubersetzung vermag.
