The first newspaper in Chittenango, New York, was the Chittenango Herald, which was published every Tuesday beginning 1 March 1831. This work includes records of Chittenango and of other areas of Madison County as well as from more than forty other New York counties and several states to which Madison County natives had moved. The following newspapers have been abstracted for this compilation: The Chittenango Herald, The Chittenango Republican, The Madison Democrat, Chittenango Phenix, Democratic Gazette, and The Chittenango Gazette. Entries are organized by county and arranged chronologically. Birth entries include the date of publication, date of birth, and full name of the father. Marriage entries include date of publication, date and place of marriage, full names of the bride and groom, full name of person performing the ceremony, and hometown(s) of bride and groom. Death entries include date of publication, date and place of death, full name of the deceased, and age at death. Some entries also contain full name(s) of relative(s) and/or other biographical information. A map of New York State, a Geographical Locator Index, and a full-name index add to the value of this work.
