“Los primeros en superar estas contradicciones [o sea, aquellas en que incurrían tanto hispanistas como indigenistas] y romper el círculo vicioso en que giraba la literatura peruana con César Vallejo, en poesía, y José María Arguedas, en la narrativa”, apuntó Mario Vargas Llosa. La producción literaria de Arguedas (1911-1969) comprende novelas, tres volúmenes de cuentos, un relato estupendo (La agonía de Rasu Ñiti, 1962), poesías no recogidas en libro y una vasta labor como traductor y estudioso de la literatura en lengua quechua.

José María Arguedas (Andahuaylas, January 18, 1911-Lima, December 2, 1969) was a Peruvian writer, poet, teacher, and anthropologist. He authored novels and stories that have led him to be considered one of the great representatives of Peruvian literature. The critic Martin Seymour-Smith regards Arguedas as "the greatest novelist of our time", who wrote "some of the most powerful prose the world has ever known".
