Gabriel Salazar
Gabriel Salazar Vergara, born in Santiago, Chile in 1936, is a distinguished historian, philosopher, and sociologist. He studied History, Philosophy, and Sociology at the University of Chile, and earned a PhD in Economic and Social History from the University of Hull, England. He is recognized as one of the founders of the New Social History in Chile, a historiographical trend that focuses on the popular and marginalized sectors. In 2006, he was awarded the National History Prize of Chile.

Among his most important works are Labradores, peones y proletarios (1985), Historia contemporánea de Chile (1999–2002, co-authored with Julio Pinto), En el nombre del poder popular constituyente (2011), Movimientos sociales en Chile (2012), and Expoliación política de la ciudadanía en Chile (2024). His historiographical approach is characterized by a critical perspective committed to citizen participation and popular sovereignty.
