Guillermo Velarde Pinacho
Guillermo Velarde was a prominent Spanish nuclear physicist and military officer, division general of the Air Force and military pilot. He chaired the Nuclear Fusion Institute at the Polytechnic University of Madrid and led the Islero Project, an ambitious plan to develop nuclear weapons in Spain during Franco's dictatorship. Additionally, he rediscovered in 1966 the Ulam-Teller method for constructing thermonuclear bombs, a significant contribution to nuclear science. He published over 400 research papers and was awarded the Edward Teller International Award in 1997 for his work in inertial nuclear fusion

His most famous work is Islero Project: When Spain Could Develop Nuclear Weapons (2016), an essay that narrates how Spain was close to becoming a nuclear power. Among his other books are Processes of Luminescence Induced by Ionizing Particles in Gases (1976), Quantum Mechanics (2002), and Nuclear Energy after the Fukushima Accident (2013). His focus was on scientific dissemination and the history of nuclear technology
