Layne Redmond
Layne Redmond (1952–2013) was an American percussionist, writer, and researcher, known for rescuing the spiritual history of the frame drum and the central role of women in ancient musical traditions. Her most influential work is When the Drummers Were Women: A Spiritual History of Rhythm (1997), where she documents how women were the main percussionists in sacred rituals of ancient civilizations in the Mediterranean and Western Asia. In addition to her work as an author, Redmond was a virtuoso of the frame drum and founder of the female group The Mob of Angels. In 2000, she was included by Drum! magazine among the 53 most influential drummers of the 1990s, being the only woman on the list.
