Marc Elsberg
Marc Elsberg (born Marcus Rafelsberger on January 3, 1967 in Vienna, Austria) is an Austrian writer known for his scientific thrillers that explore plausible technological and social scenarios. After studying industrial design at the University of Applied Arts Vienna, he worked as a strategic consultant and creative director in advertising agencies in Vienna and Hamburg. He was also a columnist for the Austrian newspaper Der Standard.

In 2000, under his real name, he debuted with the satirical novel Saubermann. However, he gained significant notoriety from 2012 with Blackout – Morgen ist es zu spät, a thriller that describes a massive blackout in Europe due to a cyberattack. The work was an international success, translated into more than a dozen languages and adapted into a television series.

Elsberg has continued with titles such as Zero (2014), about digital surveillance; Helix (2016), which addresses genetics; Greed (2019), focused on the global economy; and The President’s Fall (2021), a political thriller. His style combines suspense with technical analysis and has been recognized with awards such as the Wissenschaftsbuch des Jahres in 2012 and 2014. Additionally, he is a sought-after speaker on topics of energy security, digitalization, and politics.

Currently, Elsberg resides in Vienna and also serves as a lecturer at the University of Applied Arts Vienna, where he teaches classes on storytelling.
