In a baroque, freewheeling style that fused political urgency with playfulness, resistance with camp, Lemebel shone a light on lives and events that many wanted to suppress: the glitzy literary salon held above a torture chamber, the queer sex and community that bloomed in Santiago’s hidden corners and the last days of trans sex workers dying of AIDS, each cast in the starring role of her own private tragedy.

Pedro Lemebel, nacido Pedro Mardones Lemebel en Santiago de Chile el 21 de noviembre de 1952, fue un escritor, cronista, artista visual y performer chileno. Creció en el barrio del Zanjón de la Aguada, lo que marcó su identificación con los sectores marginados y con la cultura popular. Estudió Artes Plásticas en la Universidad de Chile, desarrollando una sensibilidad estética que luego integró a su escritura y a sus performances artísticas.

Lemebel fue cofundador del colectivo Las Yeguas del Apocalipsis junto a Francisco Casas, un grupo contracultural que combinaba performance, video e instalación con provocación política. Su obra literaria destaca por las crónicas urbanas, donde exploraba la identidad sexual, denunciaba el autoritarismo y daba voz a los sectores excluidos de la sociedad chilena. Su libro más conocido es Tengo miedo torero, una novela que mezcla lo íntimo con lo político y que refleja su estilo único, cargado de lirismo, ironía y crítica social.

Su escritura rompió con los moldes tradicionales de la literatura chilena, combinando lo barroco con lo popular y lo festivo con lo doliente. Pedro Lemebel falleció el 23 de enero de 2015 a los 62 años, dejando un legado de compromiso, innovación y valentía artística que continúa influyendo en la literatura y el arte latinoamericano contemporáneo.
