Dies veranlasste ihn dazu, den vorliegenden historischen Abriss über die Chirurgie im Deutschland des 18. Jahrhunderts zu verfassen. Stand sie zwar international im Schatten Frankreichs oder Englands, hat sie dennoch beträchtliche Fortschritte vollbracht. Fischer beschreibt ebendiese über 100 Jahre und schreitet dabei vom Quacksalbertum über einflussreiche Chirurgen hin zur Entwicklung direkter chirurgischer Praxis voran. Sorgfältig nachbearbeiteter Nachdruck der Originalausgabe von 1876.
