El cuerpo de Job —y su alma— está atravesado por el mal. Desnudo, recubierto de llagas, cae en la ceniza y conoce en primera persona la injusticia del sufrimiento. Su plegaria solo puede adoptar la forma extrema del grito, dirigido a Dios: «¿Por qué a mí?». El castigo que padece Job no compensa ningún mal, ya que él no ha cometido un crimen; tampoco es una venganza, porque nunca ha hecho daño a nadie. Expuesto a una violencia insensata cuya naturaleza no puede comprender, Job se ve inmerso en una experiencia intraducible. Queda solo el grito, como el modo más radical de la pregunta —la misma que él lleva inscrita en el nombre, porque Job en hebreo significa «¿Dónde está el padre?». En este ensayo, lúcido y breve, Massimo Recalcati enfoca desde el prisma del psicoanálisis la pregunta de Job, el grito que desborda cualquier posible respuesta: el dolor no puede explicarse en términos de sentido porque no existe teología, ni ninguna otra forma de conocimiento, capaz de justificar su desmesura.

Massimo Recalcati (1959) is a prominent psychoanalyst, director of the Institute for Research in Applied Psychoanalysis and regular contributor to La Repubblica; he is also one of the most prestigious and widely read essayists in his country. He teaches, at the University of Pavia, psychopathology of eating behavior, a topic on which he has written several reference books.
